Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Her grandmother raised her and she was a sole child. Scott went to her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she enrolled in Temple University. Along with two jobs part-time, she was also a teacher at Temple University. The hope was to become an English high school teacher. It was impossible to realize this dream when, after completing three years of study and working as a teaching assistant, she left college. She began her career as a spoken-word artist, performing her pieces during poetry readings. She then teamed up together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. The two ended up working together in writing You Got Me. At the Roots show she made her debut to be an artist. She then secured collaborations, including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. Also, she was performers on The Canada stage of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was the first signing artist for label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
